The author of 'There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe' is unknown. The version below is from Gammer Gurton's Garland by Joseph Ritson thought to be the first printed version in 1794. The illustration to the right is by Joseph-Martin-Kronheim published in My First Picture Book in 1875.

She had so many children, she didn't know what to do;
She gave them some broth without any bread;
She whipp'd all their bums, sent them to bed.
